Tired of Battling for Life: KMC Medical Student Preethi dies in Hyderabad

Family demands fair enquiry

Telangana Home Minister’s name on the screen

No Protests from ‘Civil Society Groups’

Hyderabad: Dr Dharavath Preethi, the PG medical student from Kakatiya Medical College, died at 9:10 PM on the 26th of February at Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad. She has been battling for life since 22nd Feb when she suddenly went unconscious during her duty hours at MGM hospital in Warangal.

Following her death, police moved her body from Hyderabad to Girnibaayi Thanda (Hamlet) of Mondrai village, Kodakandla Mandal in Jangaon district, where her final rites were held. The family of Preethi and the villagers demanded strict action against the accused, Saif.

She committed suicide by taking an injection of a harmful substance. Primary investigation revealed that Dr Preethi was facing severe harassment from Dr Mohammad Saif, a second-year MD anaesthesia student at KMC. Police registered a case against Mohammad Saif in connection with the case under the 108 of the IPC to Section 306, Prohibition of Ragging Act & SC ST Atrocity Act. The accused was sent to judicial remand by a court.

Governor of Telangana, Smt Tamilsai, visited Preeti at NIMS. State BJP President Bandi Sanjay accused this as a case of love jihad. ABVP protested against the KMC for not enforcing the strict ragging laws on their campus.

Family demands fair enquiry:

Preeti’s father Mr Narender works as an ASI in the Railway Department. It is known that Saif has been harassing Preity since November. It seems that her father complained to the KMC management about the same, but they have chosen to ignore it. Preeti’s parents allege that the college management did not inform them over the phone that Preeti had committed suicide.

Saif was accused of insulting and harassing her daughter as a ‘tribal girl’. Narender expresses his grief that his daughter is courageous and has performed her duties even during the Corona disaster. “If Preeti tried to commit suicide, it is understandable that she harassed Saif”, he added.

Telangana Home Minister’s name on the screen:

The allegations made by Preeti’s father that there are doubts about the investigation of the case of Preeti’s suicide attempt are creating a sensation. The student’s father, Nagender, and the family members allege that the police did not investigate in the right direction since Saif, the accused, is a relative of the Telangana Home Minister. These allegations are causing a political uproar.

It is not the first time that Telangana Home Minister Mahmood Ali has faced such controversies. The name of the home minister’s grandson was heard in the Jubilee Heels minor rape case, creating a sensation last year. Recently, the Home Minister’s name has also been heard in the case of Nellore Dargah chief Baba Hafeez Pasha, who is cheating innocent young women into marriages. The name of the home minister is becoming a headache for the ruling BRS party.

No Protests from ‘Civil Society Groups’:

Although the incident of Preeti, who belongs to the Banjara community, has created a sensation across the country, the lack of response from the Civil Society Groups leads to criticism. Only ABVP and Vishwa Hindu Parishad have been agitating for justice for Preeti since the beginning. The reason for this is that the accused belongs to the Muslim community. In the same case, the situation would have been different if there had been any Hindu upper-caste person as the accused.
