Coup in Myanmar-Military declares Emergency: Aung San Suu Kyi, NLD leaders arrested

In what is being described as an early morning Coup, the Military in Myanmar imposed a state of Emergency for a period of one Year.

With most of the TV broadcasting cut off amid rumours of a military coup in the making, military-owned Myawaddy TV announced Monday morning that commander-in-chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces General Min Aung Hlaing will be taking up the reins over the country for one year. The official TV Channel of Myanmar MRTV announced on Facebook that ‘radio and TV are unable to broadcast due to communication difficulties’. Mobile phone services have been cut off in Naypyitaw, reports Irrawaddy news.

The military-owned Myawaddy TV announced Monday morning that commander-in-chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces General Min Aung Hlaing will be taking up the reins over the country for one year. The development comes after the allegations by the Military and Military backed USDP of voter fraud in the November general elections. The Military invoked a state of emergency in accordance with the constitution, which provides it with far-reaching emergency powers, citing the civilian government’s failure to investigate these allegations as one of the reasons behind the move. The military sees that the elections were rigged. Elections were won by the party of Aung San Suu Kyi, now reportedly under arrest.

The National Elections held on Nov.8  saw a massive victory for NLD with the military supported Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) performing poorly. However, USDP challenged the outcome alleging mismanagement and lack of transparency. It called for re-election.

In view of the rising tension between the civilian government and the military Tatmadaw over the legitimacy of the Nov. 8 election results, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and 17 Western Embassies in Myanmar had issued a statement earlier this week, urging all to adhere to democratic norms and for the peaceful convening of the parliament to elect the President and the Speakers.
